| Looking After Your Lenses |
Contact lenses should be seen as an extension of your eye and when you think of them in this respect it may help you to remember just how much care they require. If you are not using daily lenses and have opted for longer wear lenses, their cleanliness is of upmost importance.
Caring for lenses is as much about being patient as it is having a good memory. You must remember to clean them daily and you must be patient enough to learn how to incorporate this into your daily routine if you are new to lenses. Making time to do this can be a nuisance if you lead a busy lifestyle but eventually it will become second nature, such as brushing your teeth or washing your face.
There are different types of lenses available and their care will differ depending on what type they are. Both soft and gas permeable lenses will need the same cleansing routine to ensure they are free of mucus and debris from inside or outside of the eye. Again, both types will need to be disinfected. Most lens wearers will be used to soaking them in solution to ensure they are cleaned effectively.
Always ensure your hands are clean before and after handling your lenses -- this is extremely important as it reduces the risk of infection or of adding debris to the lens when handling it. Always wear your lenses for the recommended time and remove when necessary, leaving lenses in for any period beyond what is prescribed for you can be dangerous and cause irritation to the eye.
Keep your eyes lubricated when removing or applying your lenses and a good tip to keep your eyes and your lenses in tip top condition, is to keep regular check ups with your optician/doctor. This will ensure you are always using the lenses most suitable for the condition of your eyes. |
